Release 23

Release 23 brings richer text formatting, easier calendar syncing, cleaner link previews, and better search visibility for your club.

Markdown is here

Your biography, club descriptions, and event descriptions now support Markdown. That means you can use bold, italics, bullet lists, and links to format your text exactly the way you want it. Want to list your club's meeting schedule or highlight the important part of your event description? Now you can.

If you have not used Markdown before, it is simple. Wrap text in
**double asterisks**
for bold,
*single asterisks*
for italics, and start a line with
-
for a bullet list. Links look like
[link text](https://example.com)
.

Existing plain text biographies, club descriptions, and events are unaffected. There is nothing you need to change - your text still displays exactly as it did before.

Add to Google Calendar or Outlook

Events got a calendar upgrade too. The "Add to Calendar" button on event pages now offers direct links to add the event straight into Google Calendar or Outlook, in addition to the existing download option. One click and the event details, including time, location, and description, land right in your calendar of choice.

Club resources look cleaner

Club resources that point to an external URL now display using their label instead of printing out the raw link. This is the same treatment already used for other external links across the site, so your club's resource list reads more like a curated set of links and less like a wall of URLs.

Your clubs are now easier to find

We added automatic generation of
sitemap.xml
, produced live by the server. This lets search engine crawlers discover public club descriptions and index them properly. In practice, this means your club is more likely to show up when someone searches for a club like yours in their area, increasing your visibility beyond people who already know about lookingforgroup.social
.

What next?

Try out Markdown on your biography or your club's description, and see how much easier it is to keep people in the loop about your next event with a direct link into their calendar app.

lookingforgroup.social
was created to get people connected in the real world. We need community leaders (a.k.a. club managers) to form clubs and we need users to enable that 'Searchable' toggle. Let everyone know you're ready to be social!

Release 22 is a quality-of-life update.

Did you know that lookingforgroup.social
does care about its users?

One of the core ideas is that I would rather shut down the service than take advantage of our users.
The end goal is to employ a small group of talented people to make something great for people to enjoy.
That is why I take user feedback very seriously, so if you see something that can be improved on the site, do let us know with the feedback form!

How much does it cost?

A user wanted to know how much it costs before they signed up for the service.
Users can create an account for free at lookingforgroup.social
.
The landing page has been updated with that information.
What can you do with a free account?
The core mission is to get people connected in the real world and with a free account you can create your public profile and express interest in joining clubs.
You can also create a club up to 12 people in your neighborhood.
A free account lets you create members-only events for your club.
This platform will let you successfully organize in your neighborhood for small clubs.
If you find it useful, then we ask that you make a donation to support the effort.

What are the 'premium' features?

Currently, there are no 'premium' features available but there are some planned.
Here is a preview:

Enable club public events - allow any authenticated user in your area to Explore and find your event and RSVP.

Sponsor accounts - account for businesses to put their dot on the Explore map and let local people see their businesses.
The idea is that users can find those local businesses and call on them when needed.

Organizations - if your club has more than 12 people, it might be time to upgrade to an organization and be able to host public events. Organization will work just like clubs but with an unbounded member limit and the ability to host public events.

Where is my message?

With the rollout of the messaging feature, a user notified me that they could not see the message. Oh no! That isn't good. The trouble was that the message was displayed below the user profile that sent the message, so on a mobile device it was difficult to get to the information. The messages are now displayed first.

What is the flashing?

On the dashboard there are onboarding slides that appear when a user is setting up their account. For a user that has completed these steps the onboarding slides would flash for a moment when the data was still loading from the database. This was very noticeable when using a mobile network with poor connectivity. A recent change waits for the data to finish loading before making the decision to show the slides.

Backend updates

The
/dashboard
page was updated to minimize the amount of data transferred between the client and the database. This should not be noticeable by the user.

What next?

Complete your profile and enable the 'Searchable' property to allow verified users to find you on the map. Another awesome thing would be to join a club or create your own club and then share it with your friends and see if you can add a few more people to your social circle.

lookingforgroup.social

We need community leaders (a.k.a. club managers) to form clubs and we need users to enable that 'Searchable' toggle. Let everyone know you're ready to be social!

Release 21 has a new feature: Contacts!

As you are "Looking For Group" and engage with other users on the platform you may share contact information with them and they may share it with you. This feature allows you to locate everyone that you've exchanged information with and vice-versa.

What was the problem?

Initially, there was the concept of 'introductions' where there was a requirement that you share contact information with someone if you wanted to introduce yourself (this was to prevent system abuse from bots and the like). Unfortunately, this made tracking down who you shared information with (or who shared information with you) challenging.
The new Contacts page solves this problem and adds the ability to toggle sharing of each contact method on a per-user basis.

However, these new features allowed for a transition back to requiring you to introduce yourself again if you disabled all the toggles and that wasn't right.
The 'introductions' concept was abandoned and now you can 'Send Message' to a user.
The requirement was dropped that you needed to share a contact method to send a message to another user.
To protect against messaging abuse, rate limiting for a user to contact anyone is limited to three times a day and ten messages total.

lookingforgroup.social
is not a messaging site, but this basic messaging capability is supposed to help get people organized on platforms that are purpose built for online collaboration.

What next?

The site has really matured and it is in need of people willing to let others know that they are ready to be social. Do that by completing your profile and enabling the 'Searchable' property to allow verified users to find you on the map. Another awesome thing would be to join a club or create your own club and then share it with your friends and see if you can add a few more people to your social circle.

Nuance: that is what makes the lookingforgroup.social
platform different. Here's a list of real problems facing adults when trying to build local community, and how the platform tackles each one.

What's in a name?

Why is it called lookingforgroup.social
?
Looking for Group (or LFG for short) is a common phrase used for online gaming communities for players trying to match with other players.
A major difference is that lookingforgroup.social
is all about getting people connected in the real world with the goal to make lasting friendships.
This initially started with tabletop gamers in mind that want to find other people in their neighborhood to play games with, but it is an open platform to get together for any social reason: watch parties, sports, crafting, etc.

The name was chosen to help people find something they already have a phrase for... now LFG! (if you know, you know)

LFG calls groups, clubs. It is intended to be a fun way of talking about things.

A group owner is called a 'Club Manager'. Again, this is just supposed to be a light hearted way of describing things.

The Problems

Problem: Where do you go to make friends?

Making friends as an adult is hard. School, team sports, and shared neighborhoods used to bring compatible people together automatically. Once you're out of that stage of life, those structures fade away and you're left to build connections on your own.

lookingforgroup.social
replaces those old structures with a searchable, local area focused platform built for adults who want to make new social connections on purpose.

Problem: Finding a good fit

Anxiety prevents a lot of people from trying out a new group.
You have to show up cold before knowing if the people there are going to a good fit.
Most platforms ask you to commit before you know anything real about a group.
You show up, you pay, and you hope it works out.
A lot of groups do not even have regular members which makes making connections even more challenging.

lookingforgroup.social
surfaces interest overlap and group personality before you ever reach out. You can see the fit ahead of time, so the commitment comes after the confidence.

Problem: Existing tools can't help groups find new members

Online social groups tend to sit at one of two extremes: private and invisible to outsiders, or public and open to everyone, including bots and trolls.

If you have a small private group and a member moves away or stops participating the group starts to shrink, there's no good way to backfill it. So, you open the group up and now it is flooded with spam and MLM.

LFG lets clubs search directly for new members who match their interests and invite them in.

Problem: Search only works one way

Most platforms put all the work of discovery on the person looking to join. They search, they apply, they wait.

lookingforgroup.social
makes search bidirectional. Individuals can search for clubs, and Club Managers can search for individuals. Either side can start the connection.

Problem: Locality is an afterthought

A lot of group platforms aren't built around proximity at all, so you can end up matched with people across town or in another city entirely.

There are so many people looking for connection, but when I look at socializing honestly, I know that I don't want to drive 30 minutes across town after work to meet up with folks to drive another 30 minutes back afterwards. I'm tired after work and I want to hang out and relax and not spend a big chunk of time traveling after a stressful day.

lookingforgroup.social
is built around local discovery from the ground up by allowing for exploration via a map. The goal is connections you can reach by walking or biking.

Problem: spam, bots, and MLM. Oh my!

Public groups are easy to find, which also makes them easy to abuse.

lookingforgroup.social
is built around small, selective, exclusive communities. Club Managers control membership directly, which keeps the quality of connections high.

LFG supports the idea of consent so that each person (User and Club Manager) has to agree before someone can join a group or become connected. Additionally, there is user verification which earns a user a badge so that you know that the person you are engaging with is real.

Problem: Friend-finding apps are designed for one-on-one connections

Most friend-finding apps pair up two people at a time. They're built for individual matches, not for filling out a group.

lookingforgroup.social
is purpose-built for small group formation: finding a fourth for your golf game, a sixth for your book club, or the right person to round out a jam band.

Problem: Small groups dissolve when people move

Groups that run on informal channels, like a group chat or word of mouth, have no recovery path when membership drops. Life happens, so LFG is here to fill the empty seat.

lookingforgroup.social
makes it easy to search for and invite compatible new members, so a group can replenish itself and keep going instead of quietly disappearing.

Conclusion

That's the shape of the problem I'm trying to solve. If any of these sound familiar, lookingforgroup.social
is built for you.

If you've read this far, you're awesome, thank you. If you're excited to become a leader in your community then please do create a club and share the message.

Release 20

Release 20 ships a major new feature: Explore Users!
If you are a verified user, then you can search for users to connect with or invite them to clubs that you mange.

A core problem

I moved to Michigan in 2022 and as part of that move, it required me to rebuild a social network.
That means I used a lot of the platforms available to try and meet people.
One of the core problems is that when your club is small like my photography club, then how do you grow your groups to have more members?

In other social media / event sites, you have to wait for people to come to you.
In my personal experience that has not worked out great having open access platforms as they attrack bots, spammers, etc.
My thought was that an organizer should be able to search for people to invite to their group.

The lookingforgroup.social
solution

Users can search for clubs (groups) in their area and request to join.

Managers (organizers) can search for people in their area to invite to the club to discuss becoming a member.

Proposal

Verified users can currently explore and discover clubs near them on the map, but not other users.
A verified user who wants to grow their club, or simply meet people with shared interests/availability nearby, has no way to find them.
The Explore feature's architecture (map, filters, hide/clear, area-of-influence radius) already exists for clubs and this same approach can be used for users.

Security considerations

Users have to opt-in to be searchable.
That is one of ideals of the lookingforgroup.social
way is that a user is not automatically enabled for a feature unless it is really important.

Only verified users can search for other users.
The idea here is a user that has gone through the verification process and has had their identification confirmed by a security representative.
Since it only takes an e-mail to get an account on lookingforgroup.social
, this extra step of verification is to make sure that a human created the account and is not a bot, scammer, or AI scraping data.

The lookingforgroup.social
server will only return searchable users within a 10mi radius of the verified user's account location.
Even if a verified user hands off their credentials to a bot the area of influence limitations make for a less interesting target because fewer records are available.
Additionally, the location data for the user is 'fuzzed' so it will be a general area returned and not an exact location to further limit leaking personal information. There is a still a risk that is listed on the 'Searchable' toggle that in low population density areas that your location will become evident if there is only one home in the area.

A scenario

I wrote this tool with a primary use case in mind: Tabletop games!
I know that making friends as an adult is hard.
The phrase "Looking for Group" and "LFG" are the common terms for people joining games online, so I borrowed that for getting together in the real world too.

I really enjoy playing tabletop games, but during the work week I do not want to add the 40 minutes of driving on top of sitting down for a 3 hour board game.
Seriously, the drive-time after work is what prevents me from doing a lot of the social events in town because there are only so many hours in the day.
If I am going to do things before or after work, I need them to be in my neighborhood.

Take action

Create an account: its free.
Yes, you have to provide your e-mail.
No, your e-mail is not sold to spammers it is only used for login and communications that you opt-in for.

"Looking for Group" in your neighborhood is easy by visiting the "Explore" area and checking out the existing clubs.

Didn't find what you are looking for?
Then create a club in your neighborhood describing what you're looking to do.
It doesn't have to be a tabletop gaming club it can be anything that interests you: Games - Roleplaying or D&D, Cards or Euchre, Boardgames, Videogames; Watch Parties - Anime, College Football, Horror Movies; Athletics - walking, cycling, running.
There is no risk.
You can disband a club if it isn't working out.
You are in control of who you let into your club and can remove anyone that isn't welcome.

Didn't get any notifications that peopled wanted to join?
Then get a verified account and use the 'Explore Users' feature to invite individuals.
They probably didn't notice when you created a new club in their area.

What next?

If it has been awhile since you've visited the site, it might be time to revisit and see if any new clubs have popped up in your area.

If you've been on the fence about trying out the app, give it a shot.

lookingforgroup.social
was created to get people connected in the real world.
We need community leaders (a.k.a. club managers) to form clubs and we need users to enable that 'Searchable' toggle. Let everyone know you're ready to be social!

Head over to lookingforgroup.social
and check it out.

As the website is brand new, there are challenges to overcome.

No one has heard about it.

Since no one has heard about it, no one is going to trust it.

The platform also has a catch-22 problem.
To be useful to a person, the platform needs community leaders to create clubs, but those leaders will only create clubs if there are people there.

Why not pay for advertising?

I am trying to solve the 'catch-22' problem first. The goal is to get a core group of leaders in the Grand Rapids and West Michigan area as it is where I live.
Once that core group of people have established clubs, then I can pay for advertising in the area to get those clubs filled and get people connected in the real world.

Another reason to target Grand Rapids is if things are not working well, I can directly interact with users and make changes as needed.
Cost is another consideration as this is all self-funded, I am working on a shoestring budget and am still using some free-tier services.
Eventually, advertising will be used to help spread the word but I want to get 30-50 clubs established so that when users visit there is a community to interact with.

What isn't working?

I didn't realize that getting people to try out the app would be the hard part about software development.
With some input from others, I decided that I would try a personal appeal on the socials.
Currently, we have a small social media presence on

YouTube

Instagram

Facebook

I've also made personal posts on LinkedIn and Reddit. These haven't seen much engagement other than support from my family and friends (which I really appreciate!).

What is working?

Most of my friends and quite a few former colleagues have created an account and checked it out, so that is cool.
Some people from my tabletop gaming groups have also checked it out.
I built this platform with gamers in mind so that they can find other role-playing and tabletop people close by, but it is really built for any small group where people want to gather around a common interest like coffee or photography.

Everyone that I have spoken with about the idea seems really supportive as they are sick and tired of being abused by social media and the enshittification of the internet.

The e-mail subscribers list has been stable and that has been a good way to communicate new information

I'm hoping that this blog will also enable more search engine optimization along with being an educational tool for people that are curious about the platform.

The implementation

There is quite a bit that went into making a short little video.
Leveraging a little of my amateur photography skills and some basics gleaned from YouTube tutorials, I set up in my office.

Equipment

Camera: Sony Alpha 7 mark IV with a Tamron 70-180mm lens

Teleprompter app and reflector to mount to the camera.
(It turns out that even with the text displayed, I stumble over my words)

Samson Q2U Microphone

Captured Audio Video input with OBS Studio

Post-processing and video editing with Shotcut

I should get some affiliate links... this app isn't going to fund itself...

Sidequest

I had one major hiccup when recording.
My initial recordings were done with the wrong microphone so the audio was captured poorly with my laptop microphone.
When I plugged in the correct microphone, then something happened which I couldn't explain.
The recordings no longer were outputting any of the audio.
I went on a 2 hour long debugging adventure and went through many guides on setting up OBS Studio and configuring audio output and channels.

What I finally discovered, is that Windows had switched my system's audio output to the microphone, so on playback it was sending the output data to the microphone.
There was nothing wrong with OBS Studio at all.
It was never going to work because my microphone is not a speaker!
After changing my Window's system settings back to my speakers, then everything was working correctly because it was working correctly the entire time.
On the bright side, I got to get deeply familiar with audio options in OBS Studio.
I just had to spend a lot of time debugging the wrong thing.

The final product

The goal was to mostly practice making a video.
A lot of effort was put into problem solving instead of production, so the lighting wasn't great.
The exterior light was overpowering my small LED lamp which illuminates me from a strange "under the chin" angle.
The learning experience was good and I'm sure the next one will be even better.

Anyone can now create a club without first providing identity information. Identity verification is only requested when a user applies for a verified account.

Getting a club started should be as low-friction as possible. The identity step was a barrier that came too early in the process, before a user had any reason to commit to it. Moving that requirement to verified accounts means clubs can get off the ground faster.

Event Preview Links Now Show the Time

Release 19 ships a new way for clubs to grow: shareable preview links for members-only events.

Share Members-Only Events

Club members can now generate a preview link for any members-only event and share it anywhere. Anyone who follows the link sees the event details and the club's profile without needing an account.

To RSVP, they'll need to join the club first (which is kind of the point).

Why Share Members-Only Events?

Clubs lose members all the time. Life happens: a new baby, a job change, a move across town and the crew gets smaller. The people who leave aren't necessarily gone forever, but having a vibrant community means having people show up. Some of the people who would love your club just haven't found it yet.

Event preview links give clubs a lightweight way to advertise what they're actually doing. Instead of describing your club in the abstract, you can share a real event and let it speak for itself. An interested person clicks the link, sees the event and the club, and decides whether it fits their life right now.

Security Considerations

One thing you'll notice that is not shared is the address information. This event may be at someone's residence, so that information is withheld from the preview at the data-access level. It is also to prevent would-be party crashers that got the information from a friend-of-a-friend.

How to Use It

Open any members-only event in your club, then tap Share. Share the link however you like. When someone follows it, they'll land on an event preview page that shows the event details alongside your club's information. On that preview page they can follow the link to express interest in joining the club.

Head over to LookingForGroup.social and give it a try.

Why am I creating a blog? I needed a way to provide context to the world for why we are doing things for the app while being separate from the app deployment cycle. Additionally, I plan to add content in the realm of community building and establishing friendships.

Spreading the word

I am not a big fan of social media in general, but getting the message out means that I've been engaging on major platforms spreading the word.
The intent is that I can make some short videos on the social platforms with links back to the blog for more long form descriptions and allow search engines to find the keywords associated with the platform which may help with user adoption.

A different kind of website

Initial feedback for the application has been mixed.
This is probably due to me not communicating the message well.
There is a lot of nuance to the lookingforgroup.social
platform as it has a lot of attributes like a dating app which requires a lot of user information because it is meant for building small intimate groups in your neighborhood.
You don't want to make bad matches!

lookingforgroup.social
is also not another social network, it is a tool to help you build community in your neighborhood by creating club around a common interest.
There are plenty of places to chat and read people's "opinions" in discussion forums, but lookingforgroup.social
is a tool when you need it allows you to find people and to be found by others.

The blog technology

I've opted to use the Zola framework to generate a static site.
It seems to be working out just fine as evidenced by this posting.
Zola has a templating and themes configuration so I was able to leverage a TailwindCSS and DaisyUI theme which matches what the main lookingforgroup.social
website uses.
Under the hood Zola is implemented in Rust and leverages libraries like
pulldown-cmark
which is being used already when creating announcement emails for all those lovely people that have that enabled in their profile.

pulldown-cmark
takes markdown files and outputs html.
With all the familiarity with the existing technologies there was a lot less to learn.
I'm pleased so far.

One minor issue

The software is packaged and executed within Docker containers.
The only technical hurdle is that I had to modify the theme to use relative paths instead of absolute paths so that links would work when deploying the container locally and also when deploying the same container into production.
I wrote up an issue with the maintainer, but until that is resolved (which I do not expect to ever happen because the internet seems to be built on unpaid individuals) I have to maintain an internal duplicate of some of the code. This is good enough for now.
